Monaghan means "land of little hills" as it is home to many small mountains such as Slieve Beagh and Coolberrin Hill, and also little lakes such as the beautiful Lough Egish. It is the birthplace of poet Patrick Kavanagh, whose poems "Stony Grey Soil" and "Shancoduff" refer to the county.
